Innovative Partnership Between SNVC, Longwood University, and Franklin Covey Explores New Ideas on Workforce Development

Since being established March 2010, the SNVC Institute for Leadership Values (ILV) has hosted five Signature Courses, based on Stephen Covey’s "7 Habits of Highly Effective People." The SNVC Institute for Leadership Values offers training in the principles pioneered by Dr. Stephen R. Covey, whose book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has sold more than 20 million copies in 38 languages since its first publication in 1989.

Upon developing this innovative partnership, SNVC made the decision to send its own employees to the Institute in order to receive the world-class leadership training. Using an approach that has proven to be effective in attaining goals, facilitators engage employees in understanding what Covey calls "true north” principles of character ethics that are universal and timeless. Employees participate in the discussions and discovery of how these principles can be applied in all aspects of their lives during a two-day workshop. The principles explored during the course mirror those SNVC seeks to cultivate within its own employees and are known within the company as SHERPA: Share info; ask How can I do it better; Education; Recruiting; Peer leadership; Awards and recognition. “It is important for the simple fact that Covey embraces the proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity, which align with SNVC's core values and are why SNVC has embraced the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as part of its emerging 'core curriculum' and SNVC culture,” stated SNVC Director of Program Services, Reginald Williams. SNVC CEO, Tom DeWitt, could not agree more, “Covey is about trust. SNVC is about SHERPA, they go hand-in-hand.” Just as a Sherpa is a trusted guide, SNVC is building the principles of trust within each employee to ensure that their guidance is founded in integrity.

Since its inception, SNVC has graduated nearly 40% of its workforce from the program. With nearly 90% of employees engaging clients day-to-day, the Covey training has revolutionized its service handlings as each are challenged to identify win-win situations, new opportunities to synergize, and more effective means for assessing the importance value of tasks. By year end, SNVC’s goal is to have 70% of its workforce trained in Covey and adapting the principles into their daily service guidance.
